Kim & Patrick – A Nags Head Beach Wedding at Magic Hour - Outer Banks Wedding Photographers OBX & Destination Weddings

Kim and Patrick's Outer Banks beach wedding was exactly the kind of intimate celebration that feels right at home in Nags Head. Surrounded by a small group of family and friends, they were married on the beach just south of Jennette's Pier on a gorgeous September evening.

We started before the ceremony with a few photographs of Kim and Patrick separately. Then everyone made their way across the dunes to a simple driftwood arbor overlooking the Atlantic. One of my favorite little details was their young ring security guard, complete with his own briefcase. He took the assignment seriously!

The ceremony itself was relaxed, personal and wonderfully small. With the ocean behind them and their family gathered close, Kim and Patrick exchanged vows and shared their first kiss as husband and wife. For an Outer Banks wedding photographer, these smaller weddings give me the opportunity to concentrate on the people and all those little moments happening around the ceremony.

Afterward, we took advantage of the dunes for family photographs before sending everyone else on their way and giving Kim and Patrick some time together.

And the timing couldn't have been better.

As we moved closer to the water, that strong afternoon light softened into the warm light I love at magic hour. We photographed them along the shoreline, played with a few different perspectives, showed off the rings and then simply let them enjoy being newlyweds for a little while. Some of my favorite photographs from the evening are the quiet ones, especially Kim and Patrick standing together at the edge of the Atlantic as the last light settled over the beach.

But we weren't quite finished.

Waiting back at the house was a beautiful classic Mustang convertible, and there was absolutely no chance I was going to leave without working that into their wedding photographs. We made some portraits with the car, had a little fun with the top down, and even captured the reality of owning a classic when the hood went up. That photograph of Kim standing there with the bouquet while Patrick investigates under the hood might be one of my favorites from the entire wedding.

That's the fun of a two-hour Nags Head micro-wedding. There is enough time to tell the whole story without turning the wedding into an all-day photo shoot. From the ceremony and family photographs to Outer Banks beach portraits, magic-hour light and one very cool Mustang, Kim and Patrick's wedding gave us a little bit of everything.

As my life has unfolded, I have found myself lucky enough to live on the OBX with my wife, Amy, raising our young son James in the sand.
