There is something special about a small Outer Banks beach wedding. With just the people who matter most gathered around you, the whole day feels personal, relaxed and focused on what the wedding is really about.

Steve and Ana chose Southern Nags Head, not far from Jennette’s Pier, for their intimate beach wedding. With roughly 15 guests, this was a small celebration, but there was no shortage of family surrounding them as they exchanged vows beside the Atlantic.

One of my favorite moments happened right at the beginning. Photographing Steve's expression as he watched Ana during the ceremony gave me one of those images that tells the story without needing much explanation. Then came the kiss, with their family and friends standing around them on the sand.

Steve and Ana also had their three grown boys there to celebrate with them, and their family is about to get a little bigger with a baby on the way. We made sure to get plenty of photographs with the boys and the rest of their family before giving Steve and Ana some time alone for portraits along the ocean.

The overcast sky turned out to be perfect for their Nags Head wedding photography. We had soft light throughout the ceremony and plenty of detail in those big Outer Banks skies. After the family photographs were finished, we walked down toward the water for portraits of the newlyweds with the ocean behind them.

One-hour weddings like this are a great example of why I love photographing Outer Banks micro-weddings. You don't necessarily need an entire day of photography to tell the story. In a short amount of time, we were able to photograph the ceremony, their guests, the whole family, the three boys, and portraits of Steve and Ana together.

And we even managed to sneak in one photograph celebrating the newest member of the family who hasn't quite arrived yet.

When I was growing up, my family would take vacations to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. I remember body surfing in the waves, fishing off the piers, and building sand castles. As my life has unfolded, I have found myself lucky enough to live on the OBX with my wife, Amy, raising our young son James in the sand.

When you book your OBX wedding, it’s one of the few times during your life when your whole family comes together to join one another in celebration. I am a wedding photographer at the beach... I specialize in the immortalizing the celebration, love and new beginnings that happen on your day.
