There’s just something about an Outer Banks engagement session when the skies decide to put on a show. Raymond and Shaniah’s evening at Coquina Beach and the Bodie Island Lighthouse had that perfect mix of romance, drama, and soft coastal light that makes the Outer Banks such an incredible place for engagement photography.
We started the session near the Bodie Island Lighthouse, one of my favorite locations for couples who want a classic Outer Banks feel mixed with something a little more cinematic. The lighthouse standing tall in the background paired perfectly with the energy these two brought to the session. Raymond and Shaniah were completely locked into each other from the start, which always makes for the best engagement photos.
One of my favorite moments from the evening was when they showed off the ring with the lighthouse softly blurred behind them. Those shallow depth of field shots felt timeless and personal all at once. The warm evening light hitting the ring while the iconic black and white stripes of Bodie Island sat in the distance gave the images such an unmistakable OBX vibe.
After spending some time around the lighthouse grounds, we headed over to Coquina Beach for the second half of the session. The weather gave us a little bit of everything. Soft evening skies, rolling waves, dramatic clouds, and just enough wind to make Shaniah’s dress move beautifully along the shoreline. Honestly, those changing conditions are part of what makes Outer Banks engagement photography so unique. No two evenings are ever the same.
Shaniah absolutely owned the beach portraits. The flowing black dress against the soft colors of the ocean and sky created such a striking look. Meanwhile, Raymond brought a calm, grounded energy that balanced everything perfectly. Together they made every pose feel natural and effortless.
As the light faded, we leaned into a more dramatic style underneath the beach access walkway. Those darker, moodier images ended up feeling almost cinematic. The contrast of the warm light against the shadows created some of my favorite portraits of the entire session. It was the perfect way to close out the evening.
I’m already excited to photograph Raymond and Shaniah’s wedding next year. If their engagement session is any indication, their wedding day is going to be incredible.
If you’re planning an Outer Banks wedding or looking for engagement photography in the OBX, Coquina Beach and the Bodie Island Lighthouse are hard to beat for variety, atmosphere, and that unmistakable coastal North Carolina feel. Sessions like this are exactly why I love photographing couples here on the Outer Banks.
When I was growing up, my family would take vacations to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. I remember body surfing in the waves, fishing off the piers, and building sand castles. As my life has unfolded, I have found myself lucky enough to live on the OBX with my wife, Amy, raising our young son James in the sand.
When you book your OBX wedding, it’s one of the few times during your life when your whole family comes together to join one another in celebration. I am a wedding photographer at the beach... I specialize in the immortalizing the celebration, love and new beginnings that happen on your day. My fun and relaxing style adds to the energy of the day without taking away from the stars of the show.
I have been photographing since 2001, and there are few backdrops as beautiful as our Outer Banks beaches. So, whether you’ve booked one of the huge houses in Corolla, or have nestled in the quiet corners of Rodanthe, or are enjoying views of the Hatteras Lighthouse, I’d love to talk with you about photographing your wedding. Call me, text me, or email me to get to know me a little better. Until then, peruse the galleries, and start dreaming about your OBX beach wedding!
I love Outer Banks Wedding Photography, I love being an Outer Banks Wedding Photographer and I want to love photographing your wedding as well!
